Our objectives

fothcp.org
Conservation. Heritage. Community.

Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park has its origins as one of the Magnificent Seven Victorian-era cemeteries, but today is also a thriving Local Nature Reserve and Metropolitan SINC through the work of the FoTHCP. Formed in 1990, we are the custodians of this important heritage space, and this vital space for nature and conservation within central London.

Our core objective is to preserve, protect and promote the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park (and associated spaces) as a space for people and nature. Our events and activities, which are largely subsidised or free, are designed to offer all an opportunity to connect with conservation and nature, history and heritage, within the local community and beyond.

Our activities

Conservation:

  • Site Management, via an extensive volunteer effort, attracting thousands of volunteers each year to deliver on key habitats (woodlands, meadows, dipping ponds) as a haven for nature and discovery.
  • Wildlife and habitat monitoring, as home to unique and rare species across flora and fauna (bats, butterflies, bees, birds, hedgehogs, mosses, lichen and much more)
  • Robust training and forest school capabilities to inspire teachers, trainers and programme participants

Heritage:

  • Monuments management and monitoring - some 350,000 individuals are interred in the space, with 47,000+ monuments.
  • History, social and family research - grave enquiries, supported by volunteers and specific projects around key social and international history topics

Community:

  • Our events and activities are subsidized or free of charge, and we are committed to removing barriers to accessing green and heritage spaces.
  • Our programming spans walks, tours, talks, crafts and more - with accessibility at its core. We have supported numerous partners, including initiatives to tackle isolation, substance abuse, health and wellbeing and other inequalities.
