Wandering Emotions is a start-up mental health initiative, born from an international competition to improve mental health for young people (which we won!). We are now on a mission to bring our idea to life within Brighton and Hove. Our goal is to make mental health education as accessible as possible, and so we run activity-based wellbeing walks through parks to promote wellbeing, educate families and encourage communication about mental health. Teaching emotional regulation from a young age can improve emotional wellbeing, interpersonal relationships, enhanced resilience to stress and reduce mental health disorders. Through our approach, we aspire to dismantle barriers surrounding mental health discussions and reduce the stigma associated with seeking support.
Wandering Emotions walks take place in parks and green spaces to boost wellbeing through physical activity and connection with nature. What sets Wandering Emotions apart from traditional wellbeing walks is the addition of mental wellbeing activities and conversations along the way. Our walks are designed by mental health professionals with activities to help children understand and regulate their emotions. The activities we run are designed towards children aged 5-12 although all family members are welcome and adults are also encouraged to join in! By including family members and trusted adults in the walks, we encourage communication within the child’s support system. These activities are designed to be accessible and can be used at home, providing adults with tools to re-open conversations about mental health and help regulate emotions.
