The Nipple Innovation Project
Our objectives
We're the UKs first breast cancer mastectomy tattoo charity dedicated to empowering those affected by breast cancer with free 3D nipple tattoos.
We provide a directory of specialist artists through the UK, our goal is to have one in every city so everyone has easy access to this service.
Currently NHS patients are offered a free semi permanent tattoo along with their mastectomy treatment. These tattoos fade away and cause detrimental physical and mental health issues for the individual. Repeat tattoos aren't often offered due to funding. Repeat semi permanent tattoos cause further damage to the delicate scar tissue and this needs to be avoided.
We understand the psychological impact this tattooing has for someone at the end of their cancer journey and we want to offer them an alternative option that helps them feel 'normal' and empowered, full of confidence.
Our tattoos are done by experienced and specially trained artists who focus strongly on creating long lasting realism which enables the individual to regain confidence after multiple surgeries.
We provide education and emotional support to the breast cancer community and work hard at raising awareness of this specialist service for people who don't know it exists.
We are also proud to be the first mastectomy tattoo charity to partner with the NHS. We're actively looking to grow in this area and are in talks with multiple trusts to do so, at this stage of growth we welcome help and input from medical professionals and other NHS colleagues.
Our activities
We hold regular fundraisers and support artists who join us in holding their own fundraisers which in turn helps us raise awareness of this work.
When we offer funding to a client they always want to help support our cause.
We collaborate with other charities to raise awareness of our service so we can support more the breast cancer community with this specialist work.
We hold educational talks and classes to discuss all aspects of this healing tattoo service.
Two of our medical tattoo artists have spoken on this subject, our charity founder Lucy Thompson, who was invited to deliver a TedTalk on the subject at TEDxNHS 2024 and Becky Barker, who spoke at TEDxMalvern.
