Gracie's Way
Our objectives
Gracie’s Way supports both individuals and families experiencing the loss of a beloved pet, and the professionals who interact with and support them during this time, such as veterinary teams, pet care workers, and other frontline roles.
For many people, pets are deeply valued members of the family, yet pet bereavement is often overlooked or minimised, leaving individuals feeling isolated in their grief. At the same time, professionals who regularly encounter pet loss may feel underprepared or unsupported in how best to respond compassionately and sustainably.
Our organisation provides compassionate support through resources, community, and awareness. We create safe spaces for bereaved owners to share their experiences, access guidance on coping with loss, and feel their grief is validated. Alongside this, we aim to equip professionals with accessible tools, guidance, and training to help them support clients empathetically while also protecting their own wellbeing.
Our work matters because pet loss can have a significant impact on mental wellbeing, and both those grieving and those supporting them can be affected. Without appropriate understanding and support, individuals may struggle in silence, and professionals may experience emotional strain or burnout. Gracie’s Way exists to ensure that no one feels alone in pet bereavement, while also fostering a more compassionate, informed, and resilient support network around them.
Our activities
Gracie’s Way is a pet bereavement organisation dedicated to supporting both people who are grieving the loss of a beloved pet and the professionals who support them. Our core activities focus on education, awareness, community support, resource development, and advocacy.
One of our primary activities is creating and sharing accessible pet bereavement resources. Through articles, guides, social media content, and other educational materials, we provide practical and emotional support to bereaved pet owners. These resources cover a wide range of topics, including coping with grief, memorialising pets, navigating significant dates and anniversaries, supporting children through pet loss, understanding euthanasia decisions, collecting ashes, and adjusting to life after loss. By making these resources freely available, we help individuals access support regardless of their location, circumstances, or financial situation.
Another key activity is raising awareness of pet bereavement and challenging the stigma that can surround it. Many people feel that society does not fully recognise the depth of grief that can follow the loss of a pet. Through campaigns, storytelling, social media engagement, and partnerships, Gracie’s Way promotes the message that pet loss is a legitimate and significant bereavement experience. We encourage greater understanding among the public, workplaces, communities, and support services.
Community building is also central to our work. We create opportunities for bereaved pet owners to connect with others who understand their experiences. This helps reduce feelings of isolation and reminds people that they are not alone in their grief. By sharing stories and experiences, individuals can find validation, comfort, hope, and a sense of belonging during what is often a very difficult period in their lives.
Alongside supporting bereaved owners, Gracie’s Way seeks to support professionals who interact with people experiencing pet loss. Veterinary teams, animal welfare staff, pet crematoria personnel, groomers, pet sitters, and other animal-related professionals often encounter bereavement regularly as part of their work. We aim to develop guidance, resources, and training materials that help professionals communicate compassionately with grieving owners while also recognising the emotional impact this work can have on themselves. By supporting professionals, we can improve the overall experience of bereaved pet owners while helping to protect the wellbeing of those providing support.
Remembrance and legacy activities form another important part of our work. We encourage healthy and meaningful ways for people to honour the memory of their pets through tributes, memorial projects, creative activities, and acts of remembrance. These activities can help individuals maintain a continuing bond with their pet while processing their grief in a way that feels right for them.
As the organisation grows, we plan to expand our activities further through volunteer-led initiatives, peer support opportunities, professional collaborations, and community partnerships. We are particularly interested in developing projects that increase the accessibility of pet bereavement support and strengthen connections between bereaved owners and the services available to them.
Ultimately, the core purpose of Gracie’s Way is to ensure that no one faces pet bereavement alone. Through education, awareness, support, and advocacy, we work to create a society in which the grief associated with pet loss is recognised, understood, and compassionately supported.
