MumsAid is an award-winning charity providing pregnant women and new mums with specialist counselling for emotional or mental health difficulties. Our vision is of a society where all mothers are supported with giving their babies the best start in life.
Since MumsAid was established in 2012, we have grown from a small start up to a well-established charity that has achieved national recognition. For example, MumsAid was the overall winner of the GSK IMPACT Award 2021. As pioneers in the development and delivery of maternal mental health services, we have provided over 5,000 pregnant and new mums with highly specialised free and low-cost perinatal support.
Dedicated to removing barriers that prevent women seeking help, we challenge the stigma that surrounds maternal mental health and advocate for mums across all ages, socio-economic backgrounds and cultures.
Our work is founded on the belief that early identification of and support for perinatal mental health difficulties is critical. We have seen how the right support makes a difference, not just to mothers but also to the healthy emotional development of their babies and the wellbeing of their families.
Our service has been recognised and validated by the Centre for Excellent Outcomes C4EO as an example of promising practice for early intervention.
We offer up to 12 sessions of counselling which are initially on a weekly basis but may be further spaced as the therapy progresses. The service is family friendly and aims to be accessible to anyone who needs it. We provide free creche support but will also see mothers with their babies.
We are able to deal with the wide range of problems that occur during pregnancy and in the postnatal period, including depression, anxiety, birth trauma, obsessive thoughts and bonding difficulties.
We offer a pragmatic, solution focused model of therapy based on Interpersonal Psychotherapy which has been shown to be effective, particularly for life transitions, and which is recommended by the NICE guidelines for the treatment of mild to moderate PND. Our therapists have a broad range of skills including CBT, EMDR (effective for PTSD) and parent infant psychotherapy and we aim to provide a flexible approach best suited to the individual needs of the mother and her baby.
We evaluate our services and are always looking to refine the process of the help we offer. An evaluation by C4EO has shown the effectiveness of our services.
