Our objectives

The Excelsior Trust has two charitable objectives:- Firstly to maintain Lowestoft's iconic 1921 sailing trawler Excelsior, a nationally important wooden sailing ship and the last of a fleet which once numbered over 300 vessels. Secondly to provide life-changing opportunities to young and disadvantaged people by sail training at sea on this authentic and inspiring boat. Since 1985 she has taken over 10,000 people to sea. In an exciting new initiative we plan to provide training in digital heritage skills at our Lowestoft shipyard.

Our activities

The Excelsior Trust undertakes three main activities:-

  1. Sail training for young and disadvantaged people aboard Excelsior, our 105-year old wooden Lowestoft sailing trawler
  2. Training in traditional shipwright techniques at our Lowestoft heritage shipyard
  3. A new digital heritage training initiative which will merge our traditional sailing history with modern 3D scanning and AV recording projects
