Treasurer for Norwich Writing Group
Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the groups' financial affairs, ensuring financial viability, proper record-keeping, and legal compliance. Key duties: managing bank accounts, preparing budgets, reporting on financial health to the committee, overseeing fundraising activities.
What will you be doing?
Currently the committee is made up of Chair, Treasurer, Program Secretary, Membership Secretary, Competition Secretary, Secretary and Webmaster plus members of the Program and Events team.
We are a members group currently with 43 online and full members.
A year ago at the AGM our previous Chair resigned. They were also webmaster and program secretary. This was a severe blow to our group, which had been in decline for some time. One of our members stepped up and took on all 3 roles and has put on an exciting program that has doubled our membership. They have written our new constitution, and set up a steering subcommittee which has proven valuable to investigate issues and present their findings to the general committee at meetings, where they are voted on or discussed for future agendas. The successful applicant would be one of the four members of the Steering Committee (which is run online generally via email) and can attend committee meetings, which are held monthly in person in Norwich or on zoom.
We elect / re-elect our Committee at the AGM annually which is in July and we are keen to appoint a new Treasurer at that time, as our current long standing Treasurer wishes to retire.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for a person who has worked as a treasurer, accountant or in a financial role previously.
We are looking for someone who has experience working with a committee - sometimes things take a bit longer as often permissions are needed before plans can be executed.
Financial Oversight and Reporting:
- Report regularly on the Group’s financial position to the committee, ensuring they have the information to make strategic decisions.
- Ensure that financial reports are comprehensible and presented in the proper form and on time.
Financial Controls and Policies:
- Ensure that proper accounting records, financial controls, and procedures are in place and followed.
- Monitor and advise on the financial viability of the Group.
- Oversee procedures to reduce the risk of fraud.
- Act as a signatory for online banking, manage cash reserves, and ensure all debts are settled within an acceptable timeframe.
Other responsibilities
- Organise the booking and pay the hire fee for our monthly meetings.
- Pay adjudicators, speakers, and competition prize winners.
- Refund allowable expenses to committee members agreed in advance.
- Inform Membership Secretary when membership payments have been received
- Bank cash received for door fees from membership secretary.
An interest in the Writing community desirable and must enjoy working as part of a team. We are all volunteers who are members of our group for which there is an annual fee.
What difference will you make?
As a member of the Management Committee with financial skills, you can help ensure that we can continue to grow through our membership, events and the possibility of external funding.
We have not applied for external funding previously and it is an area that the Chair is keen to explore, to secure our future.
We are a members not for profit unincorporated group with a constitution and have been running for 43 years.
Before you apply
Ideally we are looking for someone to apply asap so that they can be voted into the position at our AGM in July.
We will get in touch soon after they apply to arrange an interview at a venue in Norwich.
What we would like to see in the application: experience working with committees and member groups, how their financial skills would secure our groups growth for the future, their interest in the writing community we represent.
