Sustainability Charity Trustee
Contribute your leadership / management skills to addressing the climate and ecological emergency? We want to demonstrate how the future can be a sustainable one. Come and join our core group and build a low carbon future.
What will you be doing?
We have recently registered as a charity but we have been a community group for over 10 year. We have developed a network of affiliated groups that we support by providing insurance and other services, for instance fundraising.
Projects we support:
Friends of the River Exe - conservation, campaigning and developing a voice for the River Exe.
Climate Action Network:- Volunteer-led community engagement exercise empowering the public to speak up, make sustainable choices and help raise awareness of partner organisations and volunteering opportunities locally.
Exe Cargo Bike - offering local residents cheap hire of an e-cargo bike to trial and promote sustainable transport.
Mushroom - community food network.
Letters for the Earth - local campaigning activities
What trusteeship with Transition Exmouth involves:
- Contributing to shaping Transition Exmouth’s purpose, goals, plans and activities
- Contribute to good governance. Develop policies, make sure procedures are put in place and reviewed
- Collectively review and approve the charity’s financial plans and budgets
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation
- Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively
- Along with other trustees, support volunteers, freelancers or employees that we recruit
- Keep abreast of changes within the charity
- Attend Core Group meetings, adequately prepared to be able to contribute to discussions
- Use independent judgement, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect the charity’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third-party interests
- Contribute to the broader promotion of the organisation’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts
What are we looking for?
We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm, skills and commitment to the role.
- Leadership / management skills
- Willingness and ability to understand and accept responsibilities and liabilities of a trustee and to act in the best interests of the organisation.
- Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.
- Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.
- A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
- Enthusiasm for our charitable purpose.
- Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
What difference will you make?
Our most recent success was lobbying our town council to declare a climate emergency and recruit a Climate Officer. We now have a great opportunity to develop projects, events and ideas which will reduce the carbon emissions in our town and protect our local environment.
