IT Trustee Role for Environment Charity
We are looking for an IT or Digital professional to join our Board of Trustees. Reporting into our Chair of Trustees, you will be the strategic lead for our digital infrastructure, ensuring our technology—including our habitat-mapping app—is robust, secure, and ready to scale.
What will you be doing?
- Shape the Digital Roadmap: Lead the development of a technology strategy that supports our mission and national scaling.
- App & Data Oversight: Provide expert guidance on our habitat-mapping app and ensure our ecological data collection is world-class.
- Strengthen Governance: Oversee data protection (GDPR) and cyber security, ensuring the safety of our community, including our young Natural Champions.
- Systems Advice: Help us select the best tools (CRM, project management, collaborative software) to empower our delivery teams.
Strategic Governance: Participate in quarterly Board meetings to ensure our digital assets align with our Theory of Change.
Tasks:
- Digital Strategy: Lead the development of a technology strategy that supports the charity’s mission of "connecting people, connecting nature" and enables the scaling of our "Natural Neighbourhoods" model.
- App Oversight: Provide expert guidance on the continued development, user experience, and technical maintenance of the Natural Neighbours habitat-mapping app.
- Data Governance: Oversee the collection, storage, and analysis of ecological data (linked to our Spotlight Species framework) and community engagement metrics, ensuring compliance with GDPR and data protection standards.
- Operational Systems: Advise on the selection and implementation of hardware and software (e.g., CRM, project management tools, and collaborative platforms like Figma) to support the Pollinators, Cultivators, and Collectors teams.
- Cyber Security: Monitor and mitigate digital risks, ensuring that our systems and the data of our "Natural Champions" (including young people aged 8-16) are protected.
- Innovation: Identify emerging technologies (such as citizen science tools or remote sensing) that could enhance our monitoring, evaluation, and learning processes.
What are we looking for?
- IT/Digital Leadership: Significant professional experience in IT management, software development, digital transformation, or data science.
- Strategic Thinker: Ability to align technology choices with the long-term social and ecological outcomes detailed in our Theory of Change.
- Collaborative Leader: A team player who can communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical Trustees and provide support to the Director.
- Problem Solver: A proactive approach to identifying technical bottlenecks and finding cost-effective, scalable solutions for a growing charity.
- Commitment to Mission: An interest in how digital tools can be used to bridge the gap between urban residents and their local environment.
What difference will you make?
- Technological Impact: Directly influence the development of tools that help communities monitor and celebrate urban biodiversity.
- Strategic Growth: Play a key role in transitioning Natural Neighbours from a local pilot to a data-driven national model for urban rewilding.
- Networking: Work alongside a diverse board of experts in ecology, HR, marketing, and community organising.
- Social Value: Use your professional skills to support a "virtuous spiral" of improved mental health and ecological resilience in urban areas.
