About me
I am an experienced senior manager, having worked at assistant director level in a North London Borough for 28 years prior to my retirement over 15 years ago.
I have extensive experience of managing diverse functions from accommodation services, to personnel, to management services, to direct service provision, all within tight and tighter budgetary constraints. Very customer focussed, and extensive experience of managing projects with significant change management elements and IT components, using a derivative of Prince 2 (an IT project management methodology).
Since moving to Manchester in 2007, I became involved in the running of the management company of the apartment block where I lived, as a Director, until 2017. My role in this has been mostly around financial matters and liaison with our managing agents to maintain the communal facilities in the block and manage planned maintenance programs.
I was a School Governor for 4 years, worked with a charitable organisation for 2 years and was a volunteer adviser with the Engineering Development Trust mentoring teams of 6th Form students working with industry partners on specific projects and gap year individuals on industrial placements for 2 years.
Since 2011, I have undertaken the finance role in my partner's marketing company and was the Company Secretary until the company was dissolved in July 2019.
I now live In Longdendale, on the edge of Greater Manchester, and am interested in volunteering opportunities around the M60 corridor.
I graduated as a Master of Business Administration with the Open University Business School in 1999.
My employment history is as follows from most recent:
Head of Customer Services 2000 to 2007
My role was to set up and develop a new approach to customer service for my authority. I project managed the provision and commissioning of the premises, recruited the staff and project managed the IT implementations associated with the business, which included an industrial strength customer relationship management system as well as installation and integration of client services business systems. When I left this role there were about 200 staff and £6m. annual turnover, plus around £1m IT development program per annum.
Head of Catering and Cleaning Services 1991 to 2000
My role was that of a general manager, including HR, Finance, purchasing and operational staff for a trading service. I had around 400 staff and an annual turnover of £7.5m.. The operation was dispersed across approximately 200 locations, including schools, office and other operational buildings.
Personnel Services Advisor 1987 to 1991
My role was to act as an advisor to client service management teams and to undertake projects from time to time which were outside the advisory role. I advised on good HR and management practice, and was a problem solving resource to my client services.
Overall, my employment with Haringey Council commenced in 1978, initially in Management Services, where I learned much about change management.
Before this I worked for 4 years in Work Study for the GLC/ILEA, where I developed my observational and project management skills which were the foundation for everything in my subsequent career in local government.
What am I looking for?
I am looking for opportunities that are commensurate with my skill profile and experience. I want to contribute these accumulated skills, knowledge and experience to worthwhile organisations where I can make a difference and develop other people.
