About me
Having gained my degree in Genetics, I completed a PhD as a Molecular Biologist, specialising in drug resistance in Oncology patients. This led me to becoming more involved in clinical triaIs, specifically with Cancer patients and ultimately Pharmaceutical R&D and Drug Development / Clinical Research.
I made the transition into the commercial sector, first establishing my business within Executive Search withing Clinical Development and R&D on an International basis.
I have spent the best part of 30+ years running my own business or leading international teams, becoming a global leader and Executive Board Committee member of a pre-IPO business that was ultimately sold to IBM.
Throughout my career I have always been responsible for strategy, business development, account management and client management, on a global basis.
From a volunteering perspective I was a ChildLine counsellor for 5 years, working in the London office, providing support to young people every Tuesday night from 11:00pm to 5:00am. Each week this was the only office in the country open during these hours and most weeks there were only 2 or 3 volunteers. At this time of day all calls and online conversations were triaged, such that we were only dealing with "high risk" calls where we frequently had to develop a safety and intervention strategy.
Looking for a more local charity where the interaction was more personal and potentially impactful, I joined Hector's House, a male suicide prevention charity (https://hectorshouse.org.uk/) as a volunteer in 2020, working closely with the Founder and General Manager in a variety of capacities. I was instrumental in helping to establish and launch HecTalk in 2023, a twice monthly men's talking group, which has grown significantly every year.
At the end of 2024 I was honoured to be invited to become a Trustee and Secretary, roles that I continue to enjoy and take great pride in.
Hector's House and the founders and people that I have the pleasure of working with remains a great source or pride, passion and ambition.Through many of our initiatives we have made a significant different to our recipients, and I genuinely believe that we have kept many alive, supported them, provided counselling as required, and helped them to find a reason to live, to developing coping skills and to always feel loved and supported.
Whilst I am immensely proud of all that we have achieved, it only fuels me to wish to do more to combat the significant challenge that exists with male suicide and to destigmatise suicide as much as possible. Too many men end their lives this way, across all age groups and we need to support them, educate younger males, encourage more open talking and listening and ensure that they know we are there for them.
There are many words spoken about male mental health, but not enough are converted to useful actions that encourage change and support.
What am I looking for?
I am keen to continue working in areas such as mental health, male suicide prevention and supporting children in need.
I am also very happy and keen to support other areas where there is a genuine lack of support and the need growing continuously, such as victims of domestic abuse and rape, and other areas where we can truly make a difference.
My skills include presenting, public speaking, fund raising, business development, leadership, sales, account management, strategic vision and governance.
I have also worked and travelled extensively internationally and now that my children are adults would be very happy with more international travel and responsibility.
