Our objectives

Founded by Alan Turing’s Family, The Turing Trust works to improve education in Africa and the UK by providing schools with refurbished computers and IT training. By volunteering with us, you’ll play a key role in bridging the digital divide, providing young people with the tools and skills they need to succeed in today’s tech-centered world. By supporting our efforts, you’ll help open doors to education, digital literacy, and a brighter future for many.

Our activities

1. Refurbishing and Reusing IT Equipment (Volunteer Role Available: Help us refurbish donated computers to ensure they meet high-quality standards for distribution):

  • A core activity involves sourcing donations of used IT equipment. As a volunteer in refurbishment, you would play a crucial role in taking these donated computers, laptops, and tablets and ensuring they are fit for purpose. This includes tasks like data wiping, imaging, hardware repairs, software installation, and quality testing. Your contribution directly ensures that the technology we send out meets the high standards needed for effective learning.

2. Providing Technical Support, Advice, and Training (Volunteer Role Available: Provide technical support, advice, and training for our team, partners and recipients):

  • As a volunteer with technical skills, you can contribute by offering advice to our team on best practices, troubleshooting issues, and potentially developing training materials. You might also like to be involved in providing support to our volunteer team, helping to run training workshops or acting as a buddy to new or less experienced volunteers.

3. Efficient Warehouse Operations (Volunteer Role Available: Warehouse):

  • The logistics of receiving, processing, and dispatching a large volume of IT equipment are significant. Volunteers in the warehouse play a vital role in organising the warehouse, managing inventory, preparing equipment for refurbishment or shipping, and ensuring the smooth flow of resources. This behind-the-scenes work is essential for getting the technology to where it's needed most.

4. Developing Educational Resources:

  • While not always a direct volunteer role, the insights gained from your experiences in refurbishment and technical support can indirectly inform the development of appropriate educational resources for the schools we support.

5. Transportation and facilitation of donations:

  • If you are able, assist with the collection of donated IT equipment from businesses and individuals across Edinburgh and the Lothians. This may involve driving or assisting with loading, transporting, and unloading donations at our warehouse in Loanhead. Help ensure the safe and efficient transfer of valuable resources that will be refurbished for educational use.

6. Raising Awareness:

  • To sustain its operations and expand its impact, The Turing Trust actively engages in fundraising and awareness campaigns. While not explicitly listed as a core volunteer role here, your passion and experiences can be invaluable in supporting these efforts through sharing your involvement.
