Objectives

Toxteth Women’s Centre provides women from ethnic minorities with opportunity, community and support. We are passionate about providing a place where women can flourish personally and improve their quality of life.

We run ESOL classes four mornings a week at two local churches, with around 150 students currently enrolled. We are the only local provider of free, women-only ESOL classes with a creche.

Because of the warmth of the relationships formed at TWC, especially through English classes, many women build trust with our staff and volunteers and then reach out for further support. We offer a range of activities to encourage women to grow in their skills and confidence, and we support women with a variety of issues causing them stress and distress.

We have strong links and partnerships with other agencies in the city, particularly through the ‘Our Liverpool’ team which provides support for refugees, people seeking asylum and vulnerable migrants. At their invitation, since autumn 2021 our Centre Manager has been helping Afghan families at our local bridging hotel.

Our donations room has been an area of huge growth in the last year. We receive donations from a network of individuals, groups and churches. Our donations room provides items for the children at the bridging hotel, families in three local asylum hostels or referred by health visitors supporting families claiming asylum in the Liverpool region, and Syrian and Afghan families housed in Liverpool as part of the resettlement programme. Any woman attending our ESOL classes can also use the room.
