Our objectives

Team Kenya is a small UK charity working in partnership with a Kenyan NGO, Twende Pamoja,  to educate girls, empower women and transform poor communities in Ndhiwa, rural Western Kenya.

Women and girls in rural Kenyan communities like Ndhiwa are held back by poverty and gender inequality. We have worked with these communities for many years to create a level playing field for girls and boys, where all young people have the same opportunities for education and employment.

We involve all members of the communities we support to ensure girls have the best possible chance at success. We provide mothers with loans and training and hold community events where we promote gender equality.

We’ve witnessed that with education and support, girls in these communities can break the cycle of poverty and transform their lives.

We remove the barriers to girls’ education by supporting them with scholarships, counselling, training and confidence building programmes.

Our roots in supporting rural communities in Kenya go back almost 20 years, so we really understand the needs of the people we work with.

Since 2008 our partnership has directly benefitted over 21,000 community members, supported more than 20,000 girls to stay safe in school, and equipped hundreds of women with table banking and agribusiness skills.

In the UK, we partner with schools, universities, and corporations to promote global citizenship and gender equality, while raising vital funds for our work in Kenya. Our 2025–2026 strategy places young people and women at the heart of everything we do — ensuring their voices are heard, their rights protected, and their potential fully realised.

This is an exciting moment to join Team Kenya's board. We are developing a new social enterprise project in Ndhiwa — based around an eco-tourism initiative and income generating agricultural activities,  designed to generate sustainable income for local women and girls while celebrating the natural environment and cultural richness of rural Kenya. This approach brings together climate action, social enterprise, regenerative tourism, and environmental sustainability  and will restore ecosystems, empower communities and create a sustainable economy for families, ensuring girls continue to receive the education they deserve. More importantly, this approach will reduce the reliance on external financial support, increasing local independence and autonomy.

Our activities

In the UK we have 3 strategic priority areas:

  1. Twende Pamoja Partnership Priorities:  Adopt an approach that redresses the balance of power between TK and TP + advocates for change

  2. UK Operational Priorities:

Source income for projects in Kenya and essential UK operations

Raising awareness of our work in the UK and Twende Pamoja’s projects by promoting global citizenship and the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Engage with policy makers and stake holders to advocate for change

  3. UK Governance & Accountability Priorities:

Ensure TK is well governed, resilient and effective.

Regularly reflect on all UK activities to ensure they are effective and add value.

In Kenya, Twende Pamoja have the following priorities:

  1. Girls Education - Girls gain access to and attain a good quality education and have relevant skills and knowledge to fully participate in economic social and cultural life.
  2. Economic Empowerment and Food Security - Families have improved food security and develop sustainable economic enterprises to support girls.
  3. Advocacy for Safe Communities-  Girls and young women are equal and respected members of society who are safe at home, in school and in their community.
  4. Organisational development and capacity building- We work in partnership with a Kenyan NGO; we are small and sustainable. We are transparent and accountable and provide the maximum level of support to beneficiaries.

Moving forward, as we enter an exciting new phase in our partnership working, all of the above priorities will be focused around  Twende Pamoja's social enterprise activities. The hub of this will be Karibuni Eco-Cottages, which we will be upgrading to accommodate visitors wishing to not only learn about our projects but also take on a challenge, such as climbing Mount Kenya or visit Ruma National park or Lake Victoria. This approach, alongside agricultural value added activities, will generate income for other local enterprise activities as well as supporting the girls education programmes and will further  increase local independence and autonomy, creating truly transformational, long lasting  change.
