Our objectives

Sheffield Community Bike Project helps the community of Sheffield directly by making travel more affordable for people who would otherwise not have reliable means of transport. It does this by:

  • Providing pay-as-you-can access to tools and workshop for DIY repairs with support and advice from volunteer team
  • Affordable new and used parts
  • Selling refurbished bicycles

Our outcomes include increasing cycling and reducing car use, contributing to a greener, safer environment. We also minimise waste by reusing and recycling bikes and parts, encouraging this mindset among participants. By building skills and confidence, we empower people to use cycling as sustainable transport. This benefits Sheffield’s wider community by improving air quality, reducing traffic, and strengthening cycling culture. With funding, we can increase sessions, reach more people, and expand our impact across Sheffield.

Our activities

Sheffield Community Bike Project aims to promote cycling as a sustainable, low-carbon alternative to motor travel, making cycling more accessible to those who might feel excluded. Our main activities include running pay-as-you-feel bike maintenance sessions, where people can learn to fix their own bikes with support from volunteers, and refurbishing donated bikes for sale, with discounts available for those on low incomes.

We work to remove barriers to cycling by operating on a pay-as-you-can basis and fostering an inclusive environment where people can learn bike maintenance skills. We also run dedicated drop-in sessions for women and the LGBTQ+ community. Over the past two years, we have facilitated approximately 180 bike maintenance sessions and secured a permanent workshop space of our own in the heart of Sheffield.
