Rekindle
Our objectives
Rekindle was started in Newtown, Powys in 1997 by a group of people who had all experienced mental health problems within their own families. The aim was to give relief to those suffering from mental illness with therapy and targeted activities.
We help young people aged 16 to 25 throughout the area. Rekindle is all about recovery, the recovery of mental health, the recovery of opportunity and the recovery of a fulfilled life. There are around 100 clients at any one time with 40 having acute needs. This age group often falls between statutory services and can suffer acute symptoms of distress.
Our activities
Referrals come from all statutory bodies including Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services whilst many clients self refer. Our aim is to improve mental health and wellbeing and restore self-respect. We offer regular meetings in a safe confidential area, giving the client time to engage in talking therapy in a non-judgmental way. We offer activities; walks, gym sessions, art workshops and cooking sessions whenever possible. Whole life problems; housing, finance, education, training and employment, together with relationships are all addressed in a practical way. Discharge is never hurried, some clients remaining for over five years. They set their own goals and play an active role in their own recovery.
We work in partnership with a number of other agencies and charities and provide supported referrals. We take part in multi agency meetings, often as appropriate adult. The service is greatly assisted by three main volunteers. These are recovered clients who help with day to day tasks and offer friendship and support to the clients.
