Objectives

Newark & Sherwood CVS is an infrastructure organisation, with an overarching aim to improve the quality of life for people living in the Newark and Sherwood area and make the district a great place to live. Our mission is to help create, develop and support a robust, sustainable, thriving and empowered community and voluntary sector across the district. It is a largely rural area and home to a variety of communities, including isolated communities, a large traveller community, an emerging migrant population and an increasing number of older people. There are areas with high levels of deprivation, a lower than average life expectancy and poor social mobility. We provide a range of core services, direct support to individuals, community-based projects and services and promote and encourage local voluntary activity.

Our overall aims and objectives are as follows:

  • To support and develop local community and voluntary sector organisations. By providing information, expertise and mentorship around creation, development, governance, finance and funding. And, through the delivery of workshops and training.
  • Facilitate community development within the local area, by supporting and enabling communities to improve quality of life. Through network development, bringing people together and connecting communities with statutory providers, all within a community empowered framework.
  • Promote and encourage local voluntary activity. By providing a local volunteering hub, that promotes volunteering opportunities, facilitates volunteering networks, provides a reputable brokerage service and offers advice and training around recruitment, management and stewardship of volunteers.
  • Develop and deliver high quality, community-based services that are inclusive, accessible and meet the needs of local people and beneficiaries. We will do this by listening to and engaging our communities, including those that are hard to reach - to identify and respond to local need. We will use robust monitoring and evaluation to ensure services meet the required standards.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-sector partners to develop relationships, share information and knowledge and where appropriate co-produce local services and initiatives for the benefit of citizens living in the district.

Activities

We provide and delivery a range of core and community-based activities and services, this includes:

  • Community Transport service – a volunteer-led scheme that provides two types of transport for people living in the area. The first enables vulnerable people to attend medical appointments, designed for people that cannot easily access public or hospital transport, for example those with poor mobility or long-term health conditions. The second is social transport, which offers the opportunity for people who are isolated or live in rural areas to attend social and leisure activities.
  • Dementia Information service – providing one to one support and advice for people living with dementia and their carers. The service provides information on benefits, health and social care provision, group and peer support and signposting to other groups and organisations.
  • Volunteering - CVS is an accredited (VCQA) volunteer centre providing:

-online database of volunteering opportunities – matching organisations and volunteers

-1 -1 appointments with a volunteer advisor

-Resources for volunteers – handbook, leaflets etc.

-Support to local organisations around volunteer recruitment, management, stewardship, reward and recognition, practical resources, guidance on best practice and training

-Volunteer Co-ordinator’s Network – an opportunity for volunteer managers to come together to share information, ideas, best practice and network

-Online volunteering forum – for everyone involved locally in volunteering and voluntary activities

-Pathways to work – supporting long-term unemployed people into work through volunteering.

  • Core services – providing advice and development support to community and voluntary sector organisations, around creation, governance, finance and funding.
  • Engagement and Patient Experience – carried out on behalf of health care providers, engaging and involving communities around health and local health care services, and engaging harder to reach people and communities.
  • Community Development – development and facilitation of community networks and cross-sector collaboration with statutory service providers, to ensure the voice of the sector is heard and needs of communities are understood.
