Leeds Community Homes Ltd was founded in 2016 to create more community-led, affordable, environmentally sustainable homes in the Leeds area. In 2021 it was renewed as a Yorkshire-wide Community Land Trust and aspiring Registered Provider of affordable homes.
The market is failing to supply the homes that people need, so we will build, renovate and help people to create affordable housing, enabling communities at the centre of the process. People call this “community-led”, and “collaborative” housing. In an era of climate crisis, we are committed to very high standards environmental sustainability. As a Community Land Trust we will acquire land and buildings to create affordable homes. We have an open membership and democratic structure.
Our first two developments, within the Climate Innovation District, and at Mistress Lane in Armley, will give us over 50 exceptional homes in exemplar communities. Through our successful community share issue of 2016/17, we raised capital that we are investing in our first projects. We have partnered with private developer Citu and Leeds City Council to be the provider of 16 affordable homes in the Climate Innovation District (CID) through a Section 106 arrangement. In 2021 we secured planning permission to build 34 affordable units on a site at Mistress Lane in Armley in Leeds. We are working with Leeds City Council to negotiate transfer of the land, and hope to be on site by mid-2022.
We are exploring further ways to partner with others to develop more housing that we will own. Our assets will generate long term sustainable income for us through rents, and the ability to borrow against them to develop further schemes.
Our subsidiary People Powered Homes Ltd is the Community Led Housing (CLH) enabler hub for West and South Yorkshire, also carrying out consultancy work across the whole country and beyond, building the CLH movement and helping other CLH groups to progress their projects.
