HOWL - History of Women's Liberation
Our objectives
HOWL (History of Women’s Liberation) is a group of women active in the 1970s and 1980s, who are collecting the memories of women from every region who were involved in the women’s liberation movement. We are putting together a website so these memories and stories can be stored ad shared. This will be an important repository of women's activities and experiences, which can be drawn on by historians wanting to research the flowering of grass roots movements during these turbulent decades. We believe that because of its emphasis on the experiences of ordinary women activities its will be a unique collection of feminist history.
Because of its scope this will also provide an encyclopaedia of women's experiences throughout the UK and Ireland during this period. It will also provide a mine of information from our experiences, and will help current women to learn from our mistakes and successes.
Our activities
We are inviting women to write up their experiences in the Women's Liberation Movement, or to record their experiences. These are being uploaded onto our website. We are drawing up an extensive booklist of all publications dealing with women's issues during these decades, and are also putting together a timeline which details the growth of women's groups throughout the UK and Ireland.
