Objectives

Our aims are to help make Abingdon a great place to live, work or visit; to foster civic pride and promote the civic life, heritage and environment of the town.We also work to encourage high standards of historic conservation, planning and development worthy of the town's tradition and character.

The recent lockdown has raised public awareness of what a beautiful town we live in and we hope to build on that and foster the concept of "Build back better".

Although the Society has only existed in its current form since 2018, its predecessor charity was formed in 1944 and there are numerous heritage assets around the town which have survived due to its efforts.

Activities

A few years ago we campaigned successfully to have the Guildhall and Abbey Hall brought back into use; more recently we have been actively working to save Old Abbey House for the community. We are also campaigning for appropriate design standards and infrastructure for the proposed new developments - large and small - around the town and playing a leading role in a Conservation Area Appraisal for the Albert Park area.

Aside from caring for the built environment we also organise activities such as the annual Heritage Open Days and twice-yearly programmes of guided walks and manage the Community Freespace - a free facility for community groups using an empty shop unit in the town centre.
