Elephant Protection Initiative Foundation
Our objectives
The Elephant Protection Initiative (EPI) is an alliance of 21 African countries with common policies on elephant conservation. A majority of Africa’s surviving elephants are in EPI countries. EPI countries are committed to tackling the illegal ivory trade, closing down domestic ivory markets and maintaining the current international ban, as well as implementing the African Elephant Action Plan, which was agreed by all African elephant range states in 2010.
We have plans to protect elephants, but we know any lasting solutions must incorporate the needs of people who live alongside wildlife. We believe conservation and development can be achieved in tandem.
Our activities
The EPI Foundation is the secretariat which works for the EPI member countries. The Foundation provides technical and financial support to EPI countries, and countries considering joining the EPI. The Foundation works directly with government Ministries and Wildlife Authorities in partnership with NGOs, IGOs and the private sector. It is comprised of a small and dedicated executive team, based in Africa and Europe.
