Objectives

London’s fields, parks, meadows and woodlands are under threat. Despite evidence that green spaces keep our citizens healthy, sustain wildlife, and protect against heat and floods caused by climate change, we lose more open areas every year.

As part of the national network of CPRE, the Countryside Charity, CPRE London campaigns to save and promote green spaces in Greater London. Our vision is "a city with a network of green spaces which are accessible to all, rich in nature and playing a crucial role in responding to the climate emergency."

We campaign for nature and climate to be put at the heart of planning policy in the capital. We challenge poor planning and ill-considered development that threaten our green spaces and feed into key strategic consultations. We highlight the need for affordable, eco-friendly housing in areas well-served by public transport, rather than the building of carbon-hungry car-dependent sprawl on Green Belt. We encourage woodland creation and local food growing in Green Belt – the countryside on our doorstep.

We aim to bring the benefits of the countryside closer to people’ doorsteps so we can improve the quality of life for more Londoners. To do this our strategic aims are to encourage and support:

  • Policies and plans to protect and improve the London Green Belt, Metropolitan Open Land and other green spaces
  • Better use of London's land including the supply of affordable homes and the delivery of good design for all
  • Promotion of London’s green spaces for people to visit, discover and enjoy.

Activities

  • Exposing the scale of threats to green spaces in London and persuading politicians to take action
  • Finding ‘Space to Build’ – researching and demonstrating to Local Authorities how we can make better use of unused & wasted land for housing
  • Helping local groups fight and win campaigns
  • Collaborating with other organisations to publish the “London Boroughs Healthy Streets Scorecard” to encourage more sustainable modes of transport
  • Delivering the ‘Go Parks’ London Initiative supporting the activities of dozens of Parks Friends Groups
  • Campaigning to create at least ten new parks in London from sites which are protected but which are unloved and not well-used.
  • Campaigning to create a tree ring, an M25 of trees around the capital
