Objectives

The Civil Mediation Council (CMC) helps individuals and businesses throughout England and Wales by promoting the resolution of conflicts and disputes through mediation. We aim to ensure that mediators working in the fields of civil mediation (which includes commercial, community and workplace mediation) meet agreed professional standards to enable the public to have confidence when they engage a mediator, and to tell more people about the benefits of mediation.

Activities

The CMC runs a registration scheme for mediators, which sets professional standards for mediators to meet. CMC mediators must follow an agreed Code of Practice and must offer access to a complaints process from which the complainant can appeal to the CMC.

The CMC organises events to offer mediators opportunities for continuing professional development, and events for others to tell them about how mediation can help settle disputes.

The CMC works with government department and other stakeholders to promote the use of mediation.
