CharChar Literacy improves education in Malawi. Through specialist educational materials and teacher training we are increasing literacy levels and so helping young people get the best opportunities in life. Without the ability to read, children are unable to move forward in their general education, and about 50% of children who register for primary school drop out.
We work with teacher trainers who train primary school teachers and we also directly train teachers in child-centred primary education. We use proven teacher methodologies based on phonics which support the accelerated acquisition of reading skills in the first four years of primary school in Malawi. We have developed and have available high quality culturally referenced literacy and teaching materials for the youngest learners. The literacy program inspires children, teachers and the wider community to develop their own literacy skills.
