Trustee With Safeguarding Experience
Aston-Mansfield works alongside children, young people and families in Newham to help them thrive. We are seeking a Safeguarding Trustee to support our Board in strengthening safeguarding oversight and helping ensure our services remain safe, responsible and responsive to community needs.
What will you be doing?
As the organisation continues to strengthen its governance and strategic foundations, safeguarding remains a central priority in how we deliver our work. The charity supports children, young people and adults who may be vulnerable, and maintaining a strong safeguarding culture is essential to our mission and responsibilities.
We are therefore seeking an experienced Safeguarding Trustee to work alongside our existing Safeguarding Trustee in supporting the Board’s oversight of safeguarding across the organisation.
As a trustee you will help ensure that safeguarding remains a visible and actively considered priority within board discussions, risk management and strategic decision-making. They will support the Board in maintaining appropriate oversight of safeguarding policies, procedures and organisational systems designed to protect those who engage with the charity’s services.
Working closely with the Chair, Chief Executive, the organisation’s Designated Safeguarding Lead and the existing Safeguarding Trustee, you will help ensure that the Board receives appropriate assurance on safeguarding arrangements and that learning from safeguarding incidents, reviews or audits is reflected in ongoing organisational improvement.
The Safeguarding Trustee will also support the Board in maintaining an open and proactive safeguarding culture, where concerns can be raised safely and safeguarding responsibilities are understood across the organisation.
This is an exciting time to join Aston-Mansfield as we continue strengthening our governance and shaping the next phase of the organisation’s development.
Our Board works closely with the Chief Executive and senior leadership team and aims to provide constructive support and challenge in a collaborative and respectful environment.
This role is a governance position and does not involve operational safeguarding case management.
What are we looking for?
Essential
• Significant experience related to the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.
• Strategic oversight capability and sound judgement.
• Ability to communicate clearly and provide leadership to the Board on safeguarding matters.
• Strategic thinking skills, sound independent judgement and the confidence to challenge constructively.
• Commitment to Aston-Mansfield’s mission, values and beneficiaries.
• Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties and responsibilities of trusteeship.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a board and build trusted relationships with senior staff.
• A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to their duties as a Trustee
Desirable
• Trustee or governance experience.
• Familiarity with Charity Commission safeguarding guidance.
What difference will you make?
Safeguarding is fundamental to Aston-Mansfield’s work with children, young people and vulnerable adults. Strong governance and oversight help ensure that the organisation continues to provide safe, responsible and trusted services for the communities we support.
By joining Aston-Mansfield as a Safeguarding Trustee, you will help strengthen the Board’s ability to oversee safeguarding arrangements and support the organisation in maintaining high standards of safeguarding practice.
Your experience will help the Board consider safeguarding risks, ensure appropriate policies and systems are in place, and maintain a culture of learning and accountability across the organisation. This includes supporting the Board to review safeguarding reporting, identify themes and learning, and ensure safeguarding considerations are embedded within strategic decision making.
Working alongside the existing Safeguarding Trustee and the organisation’s safeguarding leads, you will help provide an additional layer of governance oversight and support the Board in maintaining confidence that safeguarding responsibilities are being fulfilled appropriately.
Ultimately, your contribution will help ensure that Aston-Mansfield continues to provide safe, trusted and effective services for children, young people and families in Newham, enabling the organisation to grow its impact while protecting those it exists to serve.
