1-3 hours / week

We're seeking for two enthusiastic and reliable new trustees to help guide the charity’s activities and support its longer-term development.

What will you be doing?

Help lead our charity and make a real difference to deaf children and their families!

Swindon & North Wiltshire Deaf Children’s Society (DCS) is looking for two enthusiastic and reliable new trustees to help guide the charity’s activities and support its longer-term development.

The charity’s aims are to create opportunities to share knowledge and experiences and to build support networks in the local deaf community. We promote deaf awareness, advance the education of deaf children, and provide support and information to deaf and hearing-impaired children and their families.

The trustee roles are a fantastic opportunity to gain experience of a charity, working with volunteers and professionals, and to make a difference to local deaf and children. An interest in people and helping others is essential.

The new trustees will join the committee and help manage regular events for deaf children and families.

This is an unpaid voluntary position averaging about 3 hours/week. The new trustees will be expected to: attend six committee meetings and an AGM each year; take on additional roles, as agreed with the committee; and support a small number of events. The meetings and events generally take place in evenings in Swindon. A BSL interpreter attends as required.

What are we looking for?

We are particularly interested in hearing from individuals with experience of social media marketing, communications and young people. Some knowledge of the deaf and charity sectors would be useful but not essential.

What difference will you make?

The DCS charity was established in 1993 and is registered with the Charity Commission. The committee is guided by the DCS Handbook which sets out the governance arrangements for the charity and describes ‘how we do things.’

We are also affiliated with the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) and have access to NDCS guidance and material on a wide range of issues such as policies, child protection, funding opportunities and recruitment.

In the past year, we have arranged visits to soft play areas and a fire station for younger children, bowling and pizza nights for teenagers, and a trip to the Christmas pantomime. We work with our members – parents, volunteers, and audiology and educational professionals – to identify and agree on suitable events, and communicate with members via social media, our website and email.
