Amicus, is a small human rights charity helps provide representation for those facing the death penalty in the US. Following the planned retirement of our current Treasurer, we are seeking a new person to join the Board of Trustees to fulfil this role.

What will you be doing?

We have six members of staff (including a Finance Officer), led by the Executive Director, who perform the Charity’s day-to-day operational functions.  Collectively, Trustees are responsible for setting strategy and for providing oversight of Amicus’ work. As we are a small charity, however, each Trustee also supports the staff in a particular area of expertise.

What are we looking for?

Specific responsibilities of the Treasurer include:

  • Providing accountancy expertise to the Board of Trustees and to the Executive Director.
  • Reporting to the Board of Trustees at regular intervals (mainly at the four scheduled meetings a year), ensuring that the Board is monitoring effectively the financial standing of the Charity and the management of its finances.
  • Working with the Charity’s Company Secretary (a fellow Trustee) and the Executive Director on Amicus’ ongoing budgeting and cash flow forecasting.
  • Liaising with the Executive Director and the Finance Officer regarding the management and performance of Amicus’ finances, such as ensuring that the Charity’s financial controls and creditors’/debtors’ positions are in order and reviewing our bookkeeping.
  • Supported by the Executive Director, overseeing the preparation of the Charity’s statutory financial statements and the financial review in the Annual Report, including managing/supervising the liaison with our independent examiners and the provision to them of supporting workings as applicable.
  • Coordinating with the Executive Director and the Company Secretary to ensure that the Charity’s Annual Report is filed on time.
  • To be one of the on-line counter-signatories (shared with other Trustees) on outgoing payments (monthly payroll payments, plus others averaging around five a month). 

The ideal candidate would bring the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Qualified accountant (essential).
  • Experience of using Xero or a similar cloud-based accounting system (preferable).
  • Familiarity with relevant tax rules applicable for a charity (eg., Gift Aid and payroll taxes) and with pension auto-enrolment (preferable).
  • Ability to work as part of a team and willingness to take collective responsibility for the governance of the Charity (essential).
  • Strong communicator.
  • An interest in human rights.
  • Experience of fundraising, corporate matching, grant-making would be useful.

Our current Treasurer has had a very positive impact on the Charity by overseeing the implementation of Xero, supporting the streamlining of our financial and accounting processes and developing enhanced financial insights for the Board.  This is an opportunity to build on his excellent work.
