Join Age UK Enfield's Board as our HR Specialist Trustee. Help shape our people strategy, chair the People & Culture Sub-Committee and support an ambitious charity as it grows, ensuring we continue delivering life-changing services for older people.

What will you be doing?

Age UK Enfield is entering an exciting new phase. Following our move to a new community hub and the appointment of a new Chief Executive, we are strengthening our Board with an experienced HR professional who can help shape our future.

As our HR Specialist Trustee, you will provide strategic oversight of our people agenda, ensuring we have the culture, governance and workforce capability needed to deliver our mission.

You will join the Board of Trustees and chair our People & Culture Sub-Committee, working closely with fellow trustees, the Chief Executive and senior leadership team. The role focuses on strategic guidance rather than day-to-day HR operations. We already have an experienced HR Advisor and external HR consultancy providing operational and employment law support.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing strategic advice on people, culture and organisational development.
  • Helping shape and oversee our People Strategy.
  • Supporting workforce planning and organisational change.
  • Promoting an inclusive, high-performing culture.
  • Ensuring HR governance, policies and employment practices reflect current legislation and best practice.
  • Championing learning and development for staff and volunteers.
  • Acting as a critical friend to the Chief Executive and Board on people-related matters.
  • Coaching and supporting our HR Advisor on strategic people initiatives where appropriate.
  • Helping ensure people considerations are embedded within the charity's long-term strategy.

We're looking for someone with senior HR or People leadership experience, strong knowledge of employment law and organisational development, and the ability to balance strategic thinking with practical insight. Previous trustee experience isn't essential—we'll provide a full induction and ongoing support.

What are we looking for?

What qualities and experience should your volunteer have?

We're looking for an experienced HR or People leader who is passionate about using their expertise to make a positive difference in their community.

You will have held a senior HR or People leadership role and be comfortable contributing at a strategic level. You'll understand how effective people practices support organisational success and be able to provide constructive support and challenge to the Board and Chief Executive.

Ideally, you'll bring experience in some or all of the following:

  • Senior leadership experience in Human Resources, People Management or Organisational Development.
  • A strong understanding of employment law, HR governance and best practice.
  • Experience of organisational change, culture change or workforce planning.
  • The ability to think strategically while understanding operational realities.
  • Excellent communication, influencing and relationship-building skills.
  • Confidence to act as a critical friend, offering independent advice and constructive challenge.
  • A collaborative approach and commitment to good governance.
  • A genuine interest in supporting older people and the work of the voluntary sector.

Previous trustee experience is welcome but not essential. We recognise that many excellent trustees are new to charity governance, so we'll provide a full induction, ongoing support and opportunities to develop in the role.

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who shares our values, enjoys working collaboratively and wants to help Age UK Enfield continue to grow and support older people across the borough.

What difference will you make?

People are at the heart of everything we do. Every service we deliver relies on an engaged, capable and supported workforce of staff and volunteers.

As our HR Specialist Trustee, your expertise will help us build a resilient organisation that is equipped for the future. You'll influence strategic decisions around culture, leadership, workforce planning and governance, ensuring we continue to attract, develop and retain the people who make our work possible.

Your contribution will support an ambitious programme of organisational development as we expand services from our new community hub and respond to growing demand from older people across Enfield.

By strengthening our people strategy and governance, you'll help create an organisation where staff and volunteers can thrive, enabling us to deliver even greater impact for the thousands of older people who rely on our information, advice, wellbeing activities, dementia support, befriending services and practical help.

This is an opportunity to use your professional expertise in a meaningful way, helping to shape the future of a respected local charity and improving the lives of older people for years to come.
