Penny's Ark

Governance Advisor

Available
Remote
1-3 hours / week

We are an entirely volunteer-run UK registered charity dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating vulnerable dogs. Our impact is international: while we manage our fundraising and administration here in the UK, we operate our own dog sanctuary in Romania, currently caring for 50 dogs.

What will you be doing?

Because we have zero paid staff, every ounce of our energy goes directly to our cause. As we scale, ensuring our compliance, policies, and strategic frameworks are rock-solid is critical. We are looking for a dedicated Governance Advisor to help us build, review, strengthen, and maintain our charity governance—bridging our UK charitable status with our frontline operations in Europe.

To hit the ground running in this role, you will need a solid understanding of how charities operate behind the scenes, alongside an appreciation for cross-border collaboration.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone:-

  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years of experience working or volunteering within a UK registered charity organization.
  • International Insight (Desirable): Any experience, knowledge, or familiarity with European non-profit frameworks, cross-border operations, or working with international branches/partners is highly valued.
  • Knowledge: Strong familiarity with the UK Charity Governance Code, Charity Commission regulations, and managing international aid/operational compliance.
  • Skills: Exceptional organizational skills, an eye for detail, and the ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into practical, straightforward policies for a remote, all-volunteer team.

What difference will you make?

By securing our governance, you give our frontline volunteers in both the UK and Romania the peace of mind and structural safety they need to focus entirely on rescuing dogs. Your expertise will ensure our  operations run seamlessly and compliantly. Furthermore, having robust, cross-border governance makes us highly credible when applying for major grants and building trust with new supporters, ensuring our sanctuary remains a safe haven for years to come.
