Finance support for small charity
We’re a Black women-led charity supporting mental health and wellbeing. We need a finance volunteer to help manage transactions, track income and grants, and support reporting, helping us strengthen our impact and grow sustainably.
What will you be doing?
We are looking for a dedicated Finance Volunteer to support the day-to-day financial operations of our charity and help strengthen our systems as we continue to grow. This role is ideal for someone who is studying towards an accounting qualification or is newly qualified and looking to gain practical, hands-on experience in a supportive environment.
The volunteer will play a key role in maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial records. This includes entering purchase invoices, staff and volunteer expenses, and all income received, including donations, grants, and sales invoices. You will ensure all transactions are correctly coded in line with our budget and funding requirements, supporting transparency and accountability across the organisation.
You will also assist with basic bookkeeping tasks such as reconciling bank and credit card accounts, maintaining organised digital financial records, and ensuring all documentation is properly filed and easily accessible. Accuracy and attention to detail will be essential in this role.
A key part of the role involves supporting our grant-funded work. You will help track expenditure against budgets, prepare budget versus actual reports, and collate supporting documentation such as receipts and invoices for funder reporting and audits. This is a great opportunity to gain insight into how charities manage restricted and unrestricted funding.
The Finance Volunteer will also support the preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reports. This may include assisting with profit and loss reports, balance sheets, and cash flow summaries for internal use, as well as helping to prepare finance packs for Board of Trustees meetings. There may also be opportunities to attend board meetings and support with minute-taking and administrative tasks.
At year-end, you will assist in preparing schedules and documentation for the independent examination process and help respond to any queries from external examiners, with guidance from the team.
This role offers the opportunity to gradually take on more responsibility over time, including contributing to budgeting processes and financial planning as your confidence and experience grow. You will receive ongoing support from the CEO, Treasurer, and a qualified accountant on the board.
Overall, this is a fantastic opportunity to build practical finance experience while contributing to a meaningful cause. Your work will directly support the organisation’s ability to deliver its programmes, secure funding, and create lasting impact in the community.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for a motivated and reliable individual who is passionate about using their skills to support a meaningful cause.
The ideal volunteer will have finance and accounting principles experience, including familiarity with concepts such as income and expenditure, budgeting, and financial reporting. Previous exposure to bookkeeping tasks such as, entering transactions, reconciling accounts, or working with spreadsheets, would be highly beneficial.
Strong attention to detail is essential, as the role involves handling financial data and ensuring accuracy in all records. The volunteer should be organised and able to manage their time effectively, balancing different tasks and meeting deadlines where required. A proactive attitude and willingness to learn are equally important, as the role offers opportunities to develop new skills and gradually take on more responsibility.
We are also looking for someone who is comfortable working independently in a remote environment while remaining communicative and responsive as part of a small team. Good written and verbal communication skills will be helpful, particularly when supporting the preparation of reports or working with colleagues to gather information.
An interest in the charity sector and a commitment to our mission—supporting Black women’s mental health and wellbeing—would be highly valued. We welcome volunteers who are aligned with our values and are enthusiastic about contributing to an organisation that is focused on equity, empowerment, and community impact.
Basic digital skills are important for this role, including confidence in using spreadsheets (such as Excel or Google Sheets) and a willingness to learn new systems, such as accounting software (e.g. QuickBooks). Maintaining organised digital records and ensuring documents are stored correctly will be a key part of the role.
Above all, we are seeking someone who is dependable, trustworthy, and committed to maintaining confidentiality when handling sensitive financial information. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to build confidence and experience in finance while making a tangible difference within a growing organisation.
What difference will you make?
This role will play a vital part in strengthening the financial foundations of our organisation, enabling us to operate more effectively and sustainably as we continue to grow. As a small but ambitious charity, having consistent and reliable financial support is essential to ensuring that our resources are managed efficiently and transparently.
The Finance Volunteer will help us maintain accurate, up-to-date financial records, which are critical for informed decision-making. By ensuring that income, expenditure, and financial transactions are recorded correctly and in a timely manner, the volunteer will support the leadership team in having a clear and confident understanding of the organisation’s financial position at all times.
A key area of impact will be in supporting our grant-funded work. With multiple funding streams, it is crucial that we accurately track how funds are allocated and spent. The volunteer will help monitor budgets, track expenditure against funding requirements, and prepare the financial information needed for funder reports. This will strengthen our relationships with funders and increase our ability to secure future funding by demonstrating accountability and strong financial management.
The role will also contribute to improving our internal systems and processes. By maintaining organised digital records and supporting the development of efficient workflows, the volunteer will help build a more structured and resilient finance function. This is particularly important as we expand our activities and diversify our income streams.
In addition, the Finance Volunteer will support the preparation of financial reports for the Board of Trustees, helping to ensure that trustees have the information they need to provide effective oversight and governance. Strong financial reporting enables better strategic planning and supports the long-term sustainability of the organisation.
The support provided in preparing documentation for external examination will also be invaluable, helping us meet our regulatory responsibilities and maintain high standards of financial compliance.
Overall, this role will directly contribute to the organisation’s growth and stability. By strengthening our financial management, the volunteer will enable us to focus more of our time and energy on delivering our mission, supporting Black women’s mental health and wellbeing, while ensuring we remain accountable, sustainable, and well-positioned for the future.
