Expert in UK charity structures and law
SNJ is a volunteer-led CLG non-profit, influential in our field, funded by donations & advertising. We want to explore having a charitable arm/tax-exempt status so we're not paying tax on donations & for programmes like TechSoup. We need advice on how to do this and help to do it.
What will you be doing?
We're not a charity because we need freedom to campaign and to speak without restraint on issues about children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). However, being a CLG means we are paying tax on donations and we don't have access to free programmes only accessible to registered charities.
We need solid advice on the right way to set up a charitable arm or restructure, and support to help us make it a reality. We have four directors, but one works FT, and three have acute or chronic illnesses, and all four are parent carers of disabled children, so we are very time and energy limited—most of this is spent creating resources and content.
However we need to get SNJ on a better footing for fundraising and income into the future, when we may need to pay staff to keep the site going.
What are we looking for?
We're looking for someone with expertise in charity law and company structures who can offer advice and practical help.
What difference will you make?
Helping us achieve dual status—CLG alongside a charitable status with HMRC, or a better set-up, would mean people's donations would reach us in full, and we wouldn't be paying for things such as Google Apps that registered charities get free. This would mean the money we get in can be fully used to support families and create more resources. It would also help compensate Directors doing additional external strategic advocacy, outside the website, so we're not the only unpaid people round the table.
