As a Crisis Support Worker, you’ll support individuals, including marginalised communities, in their most vulnerable moments. Through compassion and connection with other services, you will provide a lifeline to those in crisis.

What will you be doing?

V.L.A.D. Outreach CIC is a Community Interest Company (CIC) focused on providing vital mental health support and emergency intervention for individuals in crisis. Our mission is to offer immediate assistance, guidance, and resources to those in need, particularly those facing mental health challenges, homelessness, and other vulnerable life circumstances. We provide a range of services to help individuals recover, feel empowered, and find a path forward.

As a Volunteer Crisis Support Worker you will provide crisis support, both emotional and practical, using skills such as active listening, de-escalation techniques, conducting safety and risk assessments, and referring and signposting to appropriate services. This role will involve engaging with individuals during moments of heightened stress and offering empathetic, non-judgmental, and supportive assistance to help them navigate their crisis.

You will need to work closely with the wider team, ensuring that all interactions, observations, and actions are accurately recorded. Adhering to confidentiality as per GDPR regulations and ensuring you abide by safeguarding policies and other policies set out by V.L.A.D.

It is vital to remain calm and clear for individuals experiencing crises, so crisis management and communication skills are needed. V.L.A.D. will provide ongoing support and training to you to ensure confidence in your role and to keep an eye on any impact this role may have on you.

An enhanced DBS check will also be required before being able to take on this role.

What are we looking for?

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience: Previous experience in a support or mental health-related role (voluntary or paid) is desirable but not essential. Experience in crisis management or support work will be an advantage.
  • Active Listening: Strong skills in listening and responding to individuals in distress with empathy and compassion.
  • Communication: Clear and concise communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to adapt communication styles to suit different individuals and situations.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to assess situations quickly and work collaboratively to determine appropriate actions or referrals.
  • Resilience: Ability to work under pressure and handle emotionally challenging situations, with a commitment to self-care and managing personal wellbeing.
  • Confidentiality: Understanding of confidentiality, data protection, and professional boundaries, especially when dealing with sensitive information.
  • Training: Completion of relevant training or a willingness to complete training on mental health first aid, safeguarding, or crisis intervention (training can be provided by the organisation).

Qualities:

  • Compassionate and non-judgmental approach.
  • Ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.
  • Strong team player with a collaborative mindset.
  • Proactive and able to work independently when required.
  • Commitment to the mission of V.L.A.D. Outreach CIC and supporting vulnerable communities.

What difference will you make?

As a Volunteer Crisis Support Worker, you’ll make a lasting impact by supporting individuals during some of their most challenging moments. Your empathetic guidance and active listening can help de-escalate mental health crises, provide clarity in overwhelming situations, and offer hope when it feels out of reach. By connecting people to vital resources and services, you’ll empower them to take steps toward safety and recovery. Every interaction you have has the potential to change someone’s life, giving them the support they need to regain stability and move forward with renewed strength. Through your efforts, you’ll not only help individuals in crisis but also contribute to a broader mission of promoting mental well-being and fostering a more supportive, compassionate community.
