About me

I have had a somewhat unusual career in both the practice of commercial law and in senior management. I have been a solicitor for over 35 years. As my CV shows, I was also the Managing Director of a substantial Central London law firm for some 10 years followed by being the Chief Executive of a leading Barristers' Chambers for 6 years. My main career activity is currently the Senior Partner of a Lincolns Inn based law firm which takes up about two days per week. So I have combined lengthy experience of legal work with commercial and strategic roles. This combination enables me to advise on legal problems with a highly commercial and practical approach  

I am now at the stage where I have the time and opportunity to contribute to not-for-profit organisations. Consequently I am the Chairman of the Richmond on Thames Community Volunteer Service.

I am also a trustee with the Global Legal Action Network. Amongst other activities, this charity is active in providing fundamental support to 4 young people who are pursuing what is commonly regarded as the largest court action involving climate change in the world .The case involves pursuing claims against 33 countries in the European Court of Human Rights  

I also support two organisations who are engaged in supporting social enterprise organisations - Unltd and On Purpose- where I combine mentoring skills for senior management and budding entrepreneurs in start -ups with my legal skills in advising on a wide variety of legal and regulatory problems.

I am passionate about helping and coaching individuals to achieve high performance levels. I am currently coaching two Charity CEOs. Although I have had a number of leading management roles, I now prefer to focus on supporting management and Boards of Directors/ Trustees in a discrete fashion, operating in the background. I am keen to understand colleagues' motivations and ambitions and discover what they want to achieve and by doing so, help them with their objectives  

In my management style, I would like to think that I have relatively good levels of emotional intelligence. I believe that I am a good listener with a reflective approach to resolving dilemmas and problems. On strategic issues, I prefer to gather relevant information, make considered judgements and then participate in ensuring that that decisive action is taken.       

What am I looking for

I am currently looking for Trustee roles where I can primarily contribute my legal expertise to the governance and regulatory issues of Charities. I have no particular charitable sector in mind. I would also be keen to use my mentoring and coaching skills to assist other Trustees or staff. I am happy to use my long experience in marketing, strategy and finance in assisting any organisation that I may join.
