York Unifying Multicultural Initiative - is a local York charity. We provide opportunities for people who have come to live in York to meet with the local community, make friends, develop confidence and feel valued members of York community. We support people with different cultural roots, languages and walks of life to share skills, learn from each other and celebrate traditions.
We help promote positive awareness of cultural diversity and aim to strengthen community cohesion through our inter cultural projects, events and activities. We make lasting positive impact to the lives of BME people who, once isolated and marginalised, now have the confidence to actively participate in community life - some have even gone on to set up their own businesses.
The projects, activities and events we deliver are the vehicles for our support to BME people. Not only do they gain practical skills development across a range of themes, but the activities themselves are designed to be intercultural - bringing people together - so they also benefit from the social interaction and resulting friendship networks these make possible.
We also have a community garden, which is a great venue for events and activities throughout the spring and summer months.
