Objectives

The Young Trustees Movement exists to increase the number of young trustees, and create supportive board environments, so that charity boards can better navigate uncertainty, reflect the interests of their communities and future proof decision making.

OUR MISSION

  • Increase the number of young trustees and quality of their experiences
  • Create a norm of boards embarking on a journey of change that benefits all members.
  • Changing the image of what a trustee looks like, by shining a light on the impact made by young trustees.
  • Define what conditions allow for safe spaces where all young people can genuinely add their perspective.
  • Meaningfully empower existing initiatives working in this space.
  • To have an impact that serves all young people, we must have an intersectional movement.

YTM is fiscally hosted by the Social Change Nest (CIC). The objects of SCN are  to promote community capacity building, reduce poverty, promote equality, equitability and diversity and to support a range of social justice and environmental causes.

Activities

Board diversity is an issue - fewer than 3% of trustees are under 30.  Our movement exists to increase the number of young trustees on charity boards.

We achieve this through:

  • A connected and collaborative network.
  • Making inclusive and dynamic governance practice an expected norm.
  • Training and supporting Young Trustees, and the boards they serve.

Our activities include:

  • Board Boost - a 6 month training & development programme for charity boards.
  • Young Trustees Champion Training - A 1 hour workshop that will leave attendees equipped to champion diversity on boards.
  • A Digital Hub - online support to achieve trustee goals.
  • Bespoke interactive workshops, for young trustees and entire boards of all ages. Those we have worked with include The Arts Council, The National Portrait Gallery, Canal & River Trust, NSPCC and The Blagrave Trust.
  • Promoting young trustee opportunities and guiding better young trustee recruitment practice.
  • A network of committed young trustee speakers and ambassadors.
