Our Mission

We want Yorkshire’s young people to have excellent musical experiences, by offering inspiring, high quality music-making opportunities

Yorkshire Youth & Music is a community music and education company working across the whole of Yorkshire. We facilitate;

  • The highest quality participation and learning opportunities in music making and related art forms for disadvantaged young people in challenging circumstances, across all music styles, and according to young people’s needs and aspirations
  • Excellent training and development opportunities for musicians, teachers and others who work in young people’s music making and learning

We want music-making and music education to focus on broad horizons, creativity and imagination for all young people.  We want young people to progress, develop skills and knowledge alongside personal musical identity, ambition and preferences, based on their experience of high quality, authentic music-making.

We know that music has the power to transform and shape people’s lives. We want young people to find out if it works for them, and to make informed choices about their musical lives. We accept that music isn’t for everyone.

We know that music has a powerful role in marking out and shaping our lives and attitudes, from its formal use in ritual and rites of passage, to escape, solace, enhancing togetherness or solitude. We want young people to understand that power, to recognise it and to use it for their own and others benefit, whether they wish to listen, participate, create or any combination of activities they choose.
