Objectives

Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) is a small charity doing big things to help protect and enhance the People, Landscape and Wildlife of the Yorkshire Dales.

The Yorkshire Dales is one of the most spectacular and distinctive landscapes in England, and a vital resource for people and nature. We work passionately and practically to make sure it stays that way. Our core priorities are:

  • TO SUPPORT PEOPLE TO VISIT, LIVE SUSTAINABLY AND CARE FOR THIS SPECIAL AREA.
Working in partnership with local people to support a vibrant economy and stronger communities. Ensuring everyone can access and enjoy this special place, and inspiring people to help look after it in future.

  • TO PROTECT AND ENHANCE THE LANDSCAPE OF THE DALES
Looking after our unique natural, cultural, and built heritage - from native woodlands to wildflower hay meadows and dry-stone walls.

  • TO PROTECT AND IMPROVE THE UNIQUE HABITATS AND WILDLIFE OF THE DALES
Ensuring that the Yorkshire Dales is more resilient to climate change and helping people to appreciate and support our native wildlife.

Our work helps to protect and enhance our spectacular landscape and precious wildlife, and reaches a wide range of people, including some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our rural communities and nearby urban areas.

Activities

To meet our objectives, we deliver a wide range of charitable work directly, raise money to enable others to deliver projects as well as working in partnership with others.

Current key activities include:

PEOPLE

  • Outreach and wellbeing – our award-winning outreach work enables a more diverse range of people to visit and appreciate the Yorkshire Dales, including minority groups, people from our most deprived urban areas, refugees, and young people.
  • Community Grants - providing small grants to support community initiatives.
  • Young people - inspiring, supporting, and empowering young people to create positive environmental change through a range of innovative work including, practical outdoor activities, skills and leadership development, youth forum, environmental grants, and mentoring.
  • Environmental Apprenticeships - careers for young people who want to live and work in the countryside, ensuring we have expertly trained people to manage our landscape in future.

LANDSCAPE & WILDLIFE

  • Woodlands – expanding native woodland cover and connecting woodland and hedgerow habitats in the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding areas. Engaging communities, businesses, and individuals to care for our trees and woodlands. Driving less single-use plastic in woodland creation.
  • Wetlands - conserving and enhancing wetland habitats for wading birds in the Long Preston floodplain area. Enabling farmers and other organisations to collaborate to bring about environmental benefits that fit with land management objectives.
  • Meadows and pollinators - engagement, education, and practical conservation work to help reverse the decline of wildflower meadow habitats, wild bees, and other pollinators.
  • Partnerships – YDMT is a key partner in several nature recovery and landscape conservation programmes in and around the Yorkshire Dales.
