Since 1887 YMCA St Helens have delivered a wide range of projects and work in the community, providing a mix of housing, training, support & advice for 250+ homeless people each year, support to 150+ families and young people per year through our various projects, and being a lead organisation in many local strategy groups helping to shape the future vision of both the VCFSE sector and the town as a whole. In 2013 we became the first English YMCA to achieve the Investors in People Gold standard, which has been retained in every assessment since, with the most recent being in October 2021 – showing we are an organisation which has at our heart the importance of Leading, Supporting and Improving, not just in the work we do for the community, but also in the way we work with our staff and volunteers and lead the organisation’s work as a whole. At the centre of our work is an aim to transform communities so that all people belong, contribute and thrive. Our objectives are to: - • Seek out opportunities to make a transformative impact on people’s lives in St Helens and surrounding communities • Welcome people and provide a safe space where they can feel secure, respected, heard and valued • Inspire every person we engage with to nurture their body, mind and spirit and to realise their full potential • Speak out on issues that effect our communities and help people to find the confidence to express themselves and have their voices heard • Serve others and be active participants locally and in the wider world • Invest in people to enable them to grow, develop and progress.
Housing projects offering a planned, progressive pathway with support to achieve sustainable independent living through our 147 units of accommodation for single homeless people aged 18-55. • Support and advice combined with Training & Education is provided as a stepping stone to independence working in partnership with other agencies to increase the likelihood of residents and beneficiaries from the wider community breaking free from the cycle of poverty, deprivation and homelessness. • Family/youth work includes a fully registered nursery, which focuses on developing children’s self-confidence, autonomy and appetite for learning, as well as projects for children and young people aimed at equipping them to reach their full potential. We also provide a home for other youth groups and organisations such as the beavers, cubs and scouts. • Health & Wellbeing activities focus on providing opportunities for people of all ages to connect support and encourage using activities that reduce isolation whilst improving physical and mental health. • The Beacon building is a community hub, adjoining the main YMCA St Helens building which brings together community and youth organisations in an accessible, high quality facility. Current tenants include a St Helens Council run pupil referral unit, Halton and St Helens VCA, Chrysalis Centre for Change, and training providers such as Genesis Training Group.
