YCDT (Young Carers Development Trust) aims to inspire and nurture young carers to achieve their potential. Our approach is to work with local young carers services to identify young carers with real potential who are unlikely to succeed in education without targeted support. We nurture the development of these talented young people through a 4/5 year programme of support which usually starts in year 10 or 11 (age 14/15).
As a development mentor you will provide between 2-4 hours per month educational support through a combination of face-to-face meetings, online support and telephone contact. Additionally, YCDT organises a minimum of two events which brings young carers together for a fun activity e.g. bowling, exhibition, escape rooms. We also organise an annual Young Adult Carer Aspirations Conference to help young people from across the region to better understand their options for FE and HE as a young adult carer. We allocate a budget for every young carer we support which can cover the costs of items such as IT equipment or anything else which may help support their education and caring role.
