Our Vision and Mission
Vision: A gender equal United Kingdom in which all people realise their right to quality health and wellbeing
Mission: Sustain a people led movement which asks, listens and acts to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality
The Way We Work
White Ribbon Alliance UK operates by positioning the voices of people to share truth to power. We focus on achieving this through the application of Human Rights to advance peoples sexual and reproductive health and rights and have a Theory of Change that is centred on achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 5.
Sustainable Development Goal 3 aims to achieve good health and wellbeing for all by ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.
Sustainable Development Goal 5 aims to achieve gender equity and empower all women and girls.
Our Challenge
Women and girls (transgender men, non-binary people and people with variations in sex characteristics) are routinely marginalised (intended or not) by the health and social programs that mean to benefit and serve them, which contributes to:
ASK
We work with people to gather and share storytelling through written documentation, exhibitions and films. We host these stories within our website and share them in our advocacy and campaigning work to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights. We encourage people to share their stories, working with them through local, national and international projects and consultations to ensure that storytelling holds power for progress rather than making people relive traumatic or challenging events. We work with partners on projects and campaigns to gather stories and ensure that they are embedded into the creation of resources to improve conditions and outcomes in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals and our associated campaigns.
We hold true to one of our original global philosophies ‘Nothing about us, without us’ and storytelling is a powerful tool to achieve this.
LISTEN
We engage in programmes of work and the creation of resources where we have heard that there is a gap, lacking or inappropriate information to achieve positive change. White Ribbon Alliance UK is not a service delivery organisation. We make considered decisions to engage in programmes of work that will advance the ideas and demands of the people within our movement to achieve progress in an area of sexual and reproductive health and rights that is underserved or lacking. Central to all our work in programmatic delivery is being able to gather evidence and create resources that lead to lasting improvements in services, guidance, policy, education and care.
Our resources are sometimes written documents, sometimes films and sometimes the provision of training. Our team and volunteers are knowledgeable experts who use evidence-based approaches to share information on issues of sexual and reproductive health and rights. We are constantly learning and advancing our resources to ensure that the people within our movement have the tools that they need to advocate for positive change in their local, national and international communities.
We also amplify existing resources from our members and partners. Where an excellent resource exists, we have no need to duplicate this work and we strive towards the creation of a network that offers access to the most up to date and relevant resources to progress the goals within our theory of change.
ACT
We run and support specific campaigns that stem from the needs and voices of the people within our movement. Where a specific issue requires the effort of our movement to mobilise change, we act to ensure that the appropriate actions are set out and call on our members to join us in this action. Actions within campaigns vary depending on the most powerful route to progress. Sometimes this takes the form of joining petitions, sometimes we call on our members to share and subscribe to a shared manifesto for change and we position ourselves in the spheres of influence that lead to policy changes and systemic changes led by politicians, media leads and duty bearers of influence.
We also amplify existing campaigns run by our members and partners. Where a live campaign is achieving excellent outcomes, we have no need to duplicate this work and rather choose to position ourselves in a role of amplification and support. We host some external campaigns through sponsorship and support and run our own campaigns where specific issues need to be addressed through new action.
