Westminster Befriend a Family's vision is that Westminster becomes a borough where: ‘All families lead fulfilling lives, free from the consequences of poverty’. Our mission is to enable families to independently address both the economic and social challenges that they face. We recognise the inter-related needs of parents and their children and aim to deliver a ‘whole family’ approach. We offer support early to prevent families reaching crisis.

WBaF is the only agency in the Borough of Westminster that works with families with children aged 0 – 18. Most families are referred to us for having complex needs, but fall below the threshold for statutory support. In this way, our work aims to prevent needs escalating to the stage of requiring formal interventions.

We support families through:

  • Volunteer Befriending – our befriending volunteers are carefully matched with families and meet them for a minimum of two hours per week for six months, working with and supporting them to achieve specific objectives.
  • Broadening Horizons – our volunteer mentors support young people aged 13+ with their school work and in identifying pathways for their future. Mentors support a young person for two hours per week for two school terms.
  • Coffee Mornings – these twice-weekly, peer led groups provide support and learning opportunities to isolated mothers.
  • Events – community events are held throughout the year including family learning excursions, water sports, educational visits, workshops and social events.
  • Other services – they include work experience opportunities, drop-in advice, and signposting to other services.
