Objectives

West Kent Mind (WKM) is an independent charitable organisation affiliated to the national charity Mind. WKM’s vision is a society where everyone with a mental health problem can lead the life they want to lead free from stigma and discrimination. We promote the preservation of good mental health and work tirelessly to help individuals experiencing mental health problems or emotional/mental distress. Our services are available to anyone - regardless of gender, marital status, race, religion, belief, colour, age, ability or sexual orientation – ensuring they have somewhere to go and someone to see for advice, guidance or support that will improve their wellbeing. Our current provision comprises:

  • Creative/leisure activities and informal support clubs
  • One-to-one befriending services
  • Formal mental health training courses and workshops for various individuals and organisations
  • Affordable counselling services
  • A dedicated café for people at risk of developing a mental health problem
  • Crisis support and supported housing
  • An allotment project

Activities

For many years we have received overwhelming positive feedback about our services and are often described as ‘a lifeline’. During the past 5 years we have achieved even more than we planned to, having listened to people and developed many new opportunities for them to remain well, recover and achieve their personal goals and ambitions. Our training and anti-stigma programmes have meant that 1000s more people understand mental health, are better equipped to support someone with a mental health problem and to prevent a suicide. We have also engaged with 1000s of individuals willing to give their time, energy and donations on a voluntary basis to support our mission.
