Welsh Norwegian Society (WNS) is a not-for-profit organisation that works to promote continuing close links between Wales and Norway. We are based in the Norwegian Church Arts Centre and the society formed shortly after the reopening of the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay in 1992, as there was a great public interest in the Norwegian heritage. Welsh Norwegian Society organises special events and social functions with a Norwegian flavour. It encourages participation in cultural skills and activities related to Norwegian heritage by involvement in key Norwegian celebrations, including Syttende Mai, Juletrefest at Christmas and St Hans celebrations in the summer. The society allows anyone with an interest in Norwegian heritage, and Norwegian exiles in Wales and their families, to experience a little piece of Norway throughout the year.
At present WNS is working to preserve the Norwegian Church Arts Centre. The former seamen's church has been a Cardiff landmark for decades, and Roald Dahl was baptised there. Cardiff Council are currently the sole trustee of the Norwegian Church Preservation Trust and are planning to seek a commercial tenant for the building. WNS believes this could mean the loss of a very important historical building.
