We support communities in Gihombo, a remote and rural sector of Rwanda. Working through our partner NGO, Gihembo Forward (GiFo) we fund Early Years education and feeding, promote community health and support local people, alongside their subsistance farming, to become self sufficient through small business enterprises.
VRUK is a small group of trustees working to support a community through nursery education with a feeding programme. It is based at the Children’s Centre in the isolated village of Gasundwe and serving the surrounding area of Gihombo Sector. Situated on the shores of Lake Kivu in Western Rwanda, much of rural Gihombo has yet to benefit from the developing national economy and infrastructure.
In addition, to help the community out of poverty, we support income generation enterprises. We have provided start up funding for a range of enterprises including a Sewing Co-Operative, an enterprise manufacturing Carbon Friendly Stoves and a Fish Drying Co-operative. We also provided the resources for the community to build a cargo boat, owned by GiFo, our partner NGO in Gihombo; the boat is rented from GiFo by the Stoves Group to enable them to access more markets.
Finally, in partnership with local government, we support a successful animal husbandry project with pigs, goats and chickens.
