The Vavengers is a UK based charity working with survivors and partner organisations toward one common goal: ending Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG).
200 million women and girls are currently living with the effects of FGM/C worldwide, and the NHS predicts 100,000 of those are in the UK – although we believe the number to be much higher. FGM/C is a violation of human rights that effects a large proportion of the UK population yet it isn't treated as such. The Vavengers exists because not enough is done in this country to support survivors and protect women and girls at risk.
We started as an arts-based organisation focused on bridging the gap between the charity sector and the arts. We spent several years hosting events throughout London to raise much-needed funds and awareness for survivors of FGM/C. Since the COVID19-pandemic we've launched a community outreach programme with one of our community ambassadors in Peckham. Reaching Out To Your Community provides aid to refugees and asylum seekers alongside workshops about gender-based violence.
Our work can be split into three areas: we campaign to mainstream FGM/C and amplify the voices of survivors via our popular social media channels, we work with our community ambassadors to facilitate specialist grassroots programs, and we work with healthcare professionals to identify and support FGM/C patients in different healthcare settings.
To meet our objectives on ending FGM/C and VAWG we:
• host art-based events for the general public that raises funds and awareness for FGM/C and VAWG.
• launch campaigns to mainstream FGM/C and amplify the voices of survivors. In the past this has included a film series that gained over 25,000 views on social media.
• work with our community ambassadors to facilitate specialist grassroots programs.
• work with healthcare professionals to identify and support FGM/C patients in different healthcare settings.
