The main aim of our organisation is to provide refurbished bikes to young people from ethnic minority groups from deprived areas to increase diversity in cycling and improve cycling participation by providing lessons and bike maintenance workshops. The bike maintenance workshops give young people the opportunity to learn new skills in a fun environment with people from different backgrounds and the sense of achievement that comes with fixing something.
There's also the enhanced social support that comes with being part of a network, a lot of young people can end up staying on their estate and can get stuck in a bubble. The bike lets them get around their community and explore other parts of London. Even a 30-minute bike ride with friends can have a positive effect on their physical and mental health and help make them feel like they're part of their community.
The first aspect is the bike maintenance workshops, where young people learn how to do things like change a bike tyre, tighten brakes and fix gears. At the end of the course the young people get to keep the bike theyʼve been working on after itʼs been checked by a qualified bike mechanic to make sure it is roadworthy. The second aspect is cycle training sessions, run by Cycle Confident. YP will either learn the basics, building their skills and gaining the confidence to be able to navigate around the local area. Or they will take part in the advanced sessions which focus on dealing with complex junctions, heavy traffic or cycling at night and receive assurance that they are cycling efficiently and effectively. Once participants are confident on the roads they can take part in our group social rides. These will be short, easy rides on quiet residential roads, cycle routes and through open spaces and nearby countryside.
