Objectives

UK Mortgage Prisoners Ltd. started as a campaign group in 2018 before becoming a not for profit company. The group draws on its experience from individual cases to propose changes to the UK mortgage industry practices, policy framework and regulatory regime that have resulted in so many families becoming trapped in a ‘mortgage prison’.

Activities

The group researches and analyses information about mortgage prisoners to better understand and build knowledge about their situation as part of a strategic objective to change the mortgage market. UKMP campaigns and collaborates with many and advises on the proposed establishment of a Fair Mortgage Fund product that will allow those trapped to find an alternative solution through their existing organisation.

The practical support includes website, facebook page that provides various types of support and guidance for the mostly lower and middle income groups that are impacted be it financial, ways to re-mortgage, research and publications. With the support of volunteers and advisory groups, it focuses on providing practical and emotional support to approximately 250,000 predominantly in the lower-middle income Mortgage Prisoners in the UK, incl sometimes negotiating with lenders to avoid eviction and offering.
