Objectives

Tennis Shropshire is a registered charity, affiliated to the LTA and is run by the Committee of Trustees made up of volunteers from across Shropshire who share a common goal of supporting and promoting participation in tennis across the county.

We are a local charitable organisation run by volunteers, and we are also a member of tennis’s national governing body, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). Tennis Shropshire (TS) acts as the governing body of tennis in Shropshire. Tennis Shropshire is run by a Board of Trustees which has responsibility for all aspects of the operation of TS, and is supported by an Operational Group with delegated authority for the day-to-day oversight and support for of TS activities.

We:

  • Operate for public benefit.
  • Provide support to the 36 Shropshire tennis clubs and other venues registered with us (our member organisations), as well as the coaches, volunteers, and individual members at those establishments.
  • Support such clubs and venues to offer recreational and competitive sport in a safe and inclusive environment.
  • Provide similar support to park sites and educational establishments across Shropshire that choose to register with us.
  • Deliver our own tennis sessions to community groups and those disadvantaged by disability or adverse social and economic circumstances.
  • Develop partnerships with community organisations in order to improve access to tennis at grass roots level and to increase the level of physical activity in communities.
  • Support and promote the playing of tennis in schools.
  • Act as ambassadors for British Tennis, supporting the aims of the LTA.
  • Organise local competitions and tournaments for new and existing players of all ages and standards.
  • Promote the highest standards of Safeguarding of young people and vulnerable adults in tennis across the county.
  • Are a diverse and inclusive organisation.

We are funded by a mixture of income streams, including members registration fees, grant funding and sponsorship.

Tennis Shropshire is opening a community tennis centre, funded through a combination of grant and loan funding, and has also recently registered for VAT. The County has also become a registered charity and is required to comply with the governance requirements of both the Charities Commission and the LTA. Accordingly the County would like to appoint an experienced accountant to replace our long serving treasurer who has decided to step down after a number of years of service.

Activities

Tennis Shropshire through its Trustees and Operations Management team supports 36 clubs with 4500 members in the delivery of tennis to adults and children working towards ensuring that the sport is inclusive and available to everyone whilst delivering tennis to other areas of the community that includes:

  • Making tennis affordable via a number of areas including Parks, Schools & Colleges
  • Disability groups such as children with Learning Disabilities, Day Care Centres for Adults, Colleges that look after young adults with disability and Down Syndrome. Other areas of disability are being explored to include the Deaf and VI for example.
  • We work with Schools to deliver tennis as part of its curriculum and after school clubs using the LTA Youth program to train teachers to deliver tennis.
  • Tennis Shropshire is keen to develop the volunteers of the future through its Tennis Cadets and Tennis Futures program that trains children between 11 to 16years on how to get involved with supporting their clubs and the county in delivering tennis.
  • Tennis Shropshire also has its own Coach Mentoring program to support the development of our own coaches.

To support making tennis available and affordable to everyone, Tennis Shropshire is opening a community tennis centre, funded through a combination of grant and loan funding. This facility will be purely Pay & Play with no membership required. It will also support the drive to developing the Tennis Shropshire Community and Disability programs.

In addition to this Tennis Shropshire are keen to develop Padel Tennis by looking at possible venues to build courts for what is the fastest growing sport in Europe.
