Objectives

TCV have 60 years of experience, engaging with volunteers to carry out practical environmental improvement projects. We have been operating in the York area since 1986 and carry out approximately 200 practical tasks every year.
We enable people to make a difference in their lives and improve the places around them. Across the UK, TCV supports more than 628,000 people working on more than 29,000 projects each year to improve the environment. In 2015 we helped 20,000 people into work and/or training. Our hands-on environmental opportunities and help for people developing skills for both life and work is as critical as ever.
Environmentally, we work closely with many of the larger national organisations such Environment Agency, Natural England and Defra, as well as Local Authorities, Parish Councils and A multitude of smaller Community groups and schools.
One of our key objectives in the last couple of years has been a focus on mental health & wellbeing, with specific projects developed to address some of the factors that can cause mental illness. Establishing "Green Gym" projects to encourage social interaction with light physical activity in an outdoor setting has been a key area for TCV and this has been recognised by a variety of health care organisations including the NHS.

Activities

TCV York & Humber coordinate a wide variety of practical volunteering opportunities across the region. Our practical groups carry out their activities 3-4 days each week along with skilled and experienced supervisors. The type of practical conservation work we do is massively varied and has a seasonality to is as well. We do everything from large scale tree/hedgerow planting through to construction projects such as footbridges and boardwalks. We are primarily looking for volunteers to join us during these practical tasks and hopefully someone who may want a career in this sector. We have a well established and highly recommended volunteer training programme that has enabled many people to further their career aspirations either in a practical filed-based opportunity or in an environmental management and advisory role.
