Objectives

Sutton House Music Society is a charity dedicated to bringing high-quality live music to Hackney. For more than thirty years it has been successfully putting on concerts in two of the oldest buildings in Hackney, an Elizabethan church and a Tudor Manor House with a fine Steinway grand piano. Our musicians include established international artists, as well as rising young stars, playing a wide variety of music. SHMS is run by volunteers and operates with a modest budget. With the help of sponsorship from local businesses, ticket prices are kept low to make sure concerts are accessible to as many as possible. Free places are provided for under 26s and for carers. There is very little live classical music in Hackney - we are providing music of the highest quality at an affordable price in a relaxed informal welcoming atmosphere.

Activities

We book young up-and-coming musicians, giving them work early on in their careers. We also attract more established artists who are happy to perform in Hackney as it gives them the chance to run through a programme before taking it on to a bigger stage. We make sure we attract as wide an audience as possible and have built up an impressively large mailing list made up of people from all communities in Hackney. We are the only chamber music organisation in Hackney regularly putting on classical concerts. We have widen the range of music we put on which now includes folk, jazz and world music, and sometimes a blend of them all. This increases our appeal.
